As I’ve mentioned before, N generally goes to bed without any problems at all. In fact, the routine is so easy that I’m starting to get a little bored with it. It’s not that I’m looking for a fight, mind you – just something a little more interesting.

The other night I decided to try to add a new wrinkle.

As I was carrying him to bed, I said in my most encouraging voice, “Do you know what it’s time for?”

He looked at me, puzzled, so I repeated myself. “Do you? Do you know what it’s time for?”

After another brief considering look, he smiled his biggest open-mouthed grin. “Chocolate!”

“What? Um – “

“Chocolate!”

“No, bed.”

“CHOCOLATE!”

“No, silly. It’s dark out. It’s time for bed.”

“H’ray, chocolate!”

Sigh.

Did I really think that I wanted bedtime to be more interesting?
