{"id":2038,"date":"2013-09-16T07:10:12","date_gmt":"2013-09-16T12:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stories.daddytales.com\/?p=2038"},"modified":"2013-09-16T07:10:12","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T12:10:12","slug":"come-sail-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pat-matthews.com\/stories\/2013\/09\/16\/come-sail-away\/","title":{"rendered":"Come Sail Away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, I accidentally <a href=\"http:\/\/stories.daddytales.com\/?p=2026\">embarrassed my oldest son<\/a> by singing Big Time as we dropped him off at school.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, we were blasting Come Sail Away as we pulled in.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>On board, I&#8217;m the captain&#8230;<br \/>\nSo climb aboard!<br \/>\nWe&#8217;ll search for tomorrow on every shore<br \/>\nAnd I&#8217;ll try, oh Lord, I&#8217;ll try&#8230; to carry on!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I suppose it&#8217;s possible to listen to this song without joining in. . . but not for us. The boys and I all sang along, and if my voice cracked horribly on the high notes, nobody seemed to care.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>We lived happily forever<br \/>\nSo the story goes<br \/>\nBut somehow we missed out on the pot of gold<br \/>\nBut we&#8217;ll try best that we can to carry on<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230; until they noticed other kids smiling at us. My oldest&#8217;s face turned bright pink. Instead of ducking his head and sneaking away, though, he just started laughing. We did our <a href=\"http:\/\/stories.daddytales.com\/?p=1197\">secret handshakes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stories.daddytales.com\/?p=546\">air five<\/a>, and they started walking away.<\/p>\n<p>I, however, was still feeling silly. I drove next to them with the windows open and continued singing<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>They sang to me this song of hope and this is what they said<br \/>\nThey said, &#8220;Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me, lads!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Both kids laughed. Then my oldest struck an opera pose and joined in the chorus.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ll admit it&#8230; I almost picked them back up and whisked them away to a day of amusement parks.<\/p>\n<p>I really should have. It was the perfect moment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For me, music is like laughing: it should be enjoyed without any sense of self-awareness. As soon as you start thinking about what other people are thinking, you&#8217;ve lost the heart of it.
