{"id":1919,"date":"2013-05-27T08:42:33","date_gmt":"2013-05-27T13:42:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stories.daddytales.com\/?p=1919"},"modified":"2013-05-27T08:42:33","modified_gmt":"2013-05-27T13:42:33","slug":"just-a-joke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pat-matthews.com\/stories\/2013\/05\/27\/just-a-joke\/","title":{"rendered":"Just a joke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was working upstairs this morning when I heard the kids go from arguing to yelling to &#8220;time for Daddy to interfere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As always, my arrival cued the start of &#8220;this is what he did&#8221;s, with each of them telling what horrible thing his brother did. The accusations spiraled back in time, until we got to this one, from my oldest son:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He locked me out of the house!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His younger brother threw up his hands. &#8220;It was just a joke!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The two looked at me, waiting for judgement. We had apparently reached that most elusive of all things: the reason a fight started. Unfortunately, my brain was too slow to come up with anything profound.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hm,&#8221; I said to my youngest. &#8220;I&#8217;m good with that being a joke, but that means you have to laugh it off the next time he locks you out of the house.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Out of the corner of my eye, I saw his older brother start to smile.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wait!&#8221; my wife interrupted. &#8220;That is not a joke. We do NOT joke by locking people out of the house.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yeah. That&#8217;s probably a better answer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s rare that I actually manage to get to the bottom of one of these arguments. I have a feeling, though, that they all probably start with the same kind of thing.
