The skating parties are lots of fun. Most of it is free-skating, but towards the end, they have everyone stand in a giant oval and dance the Hokey Pokey and Electric Boogaloo.

It’s hard to Hokey Pokey when you’re on roller skates, so the whole thing ends up being just silly fun.

This time, however, there was a major change: my second-grader didn’t want to go out onto the floor. I tried to convince him, but he didn’t want to talk about it. I figured he was growing up, reaching that age where he’d be embarrassed by a public Hokey Pokey. So I let it drop, and went to Hokey Pokey with his little brother.

As the Hokey Pokey ended, I looked around to find my oldest.

He was standing in the snack shop, watching the Simpsons.

So much for growing up.

I have no idea how long the Hokey Pokey has been around. Has it been a century? I don’t know. It’s silly. It’s fun. It’s embarrassing, and I completely understand why my second-grader wouldn’t do it.
