Surviving the news

The news these days is so dismal, with story after story of harassment (and worse). Everywhere we look, it seems that some person in power is taking advantage of someone not in power.

It’s opened our eyes to what seems to be an epidemic of bad character, and we’ve learned that we need to be both more aware and more sympathetic. People are being victimized, and not finding the help they need when they are at their most vulnerable. In the halls of power, we hear excuses for the victimizers and rationalizations as to why they should still be supported.

It’s horrible and repugnant and needs to change.

Now that we are more aware, though, let’s take a breath and catch our balance.

Think for a moment about the people you know personally. Put aside the news stories and rumors, the gossip and rabble-rousing talk show hosts. Focus solely on your friends and family.

How many are you proud to call friends?
How many do you love?
How many are you thankful for?

I’m guessing these numbers far outweigh the number you know who are monsters. What is the ratio? Do you know ten good people for every one bad? Is it twenty to one? One hundred to one?

We’ve heard about a lot of bad people, but please remember that they’re vastly outnumbered by a veritable horde of amazing, wonderful people, some of whom love you very deeply.

In fact, I’m guessing you yourself are a wonderful person, someone who loves with a deep sincerity, and cares about right and wrong, someone who does not abuse power or turn away when you see a person in need.

I agree that we need to be aware of the bad people, but we also need to be aware of the wonderful ones.
